Even in the digital age, nothing works without the right equipment: 'Hardware' is the title of Billy F Gibbons' third solo album to be released on Concord Records. Work on the sequel to The Big Bad Blues (2018) took place at Escape Studios in the California desert near Palm Springs. ZZ Top frontman Gibbons was assisted there by his co-producers Matt Sorum and Mike Fiorentino, while engineer Chad Shlosser also handled part of the production. "We locked ourselves in the desert for a few weeks in the middle of the summer heat, which was a pretty intense experience in itself," Billy sums up the filming process. "Then we just cranked it up to take the edge off - and that's what Hardware is all about. Overall, it's a really angry rock statement, but one that never forgets the secrets the desert holds." Although new approaches and elements continue to emerge in the record's punchy, rock sound, "Hardware" as a whole bears the clear signature of Billy F. Gibbons. Aside from the unmistakable voice of the seventy-one-year-old Texan, the sonic spectrum ranges from classic hard rock to neometal, from country rock to new wave, from blues to hints of surf rock, making "Hardware" impossible to pigeonhole.
