The violinist from Avranches, France, was still a member of John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra after his stints with George Duke and Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention when, in early 1975, he began one of the most creative phases of his career with his debut "Upon The Wings Of Music" and the follow-up album "Aurora", released the same year. Three more albums followed by 1978, often juxtaposing the explosive side of fusion with a more lyrical, supposedly "European" interpretation. The elaborate compositions, which in the title track "Imaginary Voyage" could sometimes culminate in a four-part, twenty-minute suite, did not stand in the way of inspired improvisations and energetic ensemble playing. References to country ("New Country") and funk excursions ("The Art Of Happiness") had their place. Ponty could rely on his regulars Darryl Stuermer (guitar), Patrice Rushen (keyboards) and Tom Fowler (bass) in all musical situations, complemented by rotating top drummers like Ndugu and Steve Smith. The Frenchman also proved to be a pioneer of the electric violin with a five-string instrument with a low C string and - for example, on the track "Cosmic Messenger" - did not shy away from analog studio effects. With these five albums, Jean-Luc Ponty has definitively become the most important and influential jazz violinist next to Stéphane Grappelli.
