Since the band first came to attention 32 years ago with their self-titled debut, they've released ten full-length albums to date. For the last six albums, the Chili Peppers have collaborated with legendary producer Rick Rubin. All have charted in the top five of the US album charts. In 2016, however, it was time for a change. An equally legendary figure is now behind the mixing desk: rock and rap producer Danger Mouse, who has worked for The Black Keys, Beck and Gorillaz and most recently mixed Adele's new album. He's backed by longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, who plays with bassist Flea in the art rock supergroup Atoms for Peace. But anyone expecting a musical 180-degree turn is mistaken. The unmistakable blend of Chili Peppers and funky rock is also at the forefront in the song "The Getaway". Still, a fresh wind blows on the new album, as the first single "Dark Necessities" proves. Funky guitar, groovy drums and slap bass are now joined by piano. Combined with the light and airy chorus, Anthony, Flea, Chad and Josh create a surprisingly poppy image. Overall, "The Getaway" is a sequel to 2011's "I'm With You." For 30 years, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have been refining their signature California funk rock sound time and time again. They're not stopping in 2016 either. "The Getaway" is an album that does many things differently, but at its core remains RHCP.
