Amused To Death is a 23 year old album that couldn't be more current. Roger Waters' portrait of a society that has become a slave to television screens was released in 2015 in a remastered version and with new cover art. James Guthrie, who also mixed the original release and has worked with Waters since Pink Floyd's The Wall, is responsible for the re-working of the original recordings. Given that Amused To Death was recorded over nearly five years on three different formats, assembling the masters was no easy task. Guthrie travelled to London - and found hundreds of them, with different recordings of the same songs in different formats. So it was a Herculean task to first reconstruct the album and then get down to the real work - remastering the surround and stereo 5.1 mix. Amused To Death is an immensely strong album, both conceptually and musically, for which Waters and his co-producer Patrick Leonard also brought together some excellent musicians. Exceptional guitarist Jeff Beck contributes to eight songs, Don Henley sings on Watching TV, Rita Coolidge on Amused to Death, and soul singer P. P. Arnold in Perfect Sense Part I / Part II. The album also reunites Waters with composer Michael Kamen, who contributed orchestral arrangements to Too Much Rope and What God Wants, Part III. The cover art for the 2015 release was created by Sean Evans, creative director of The Wall Live 2010-2013 tour, and features a small boy sitting in front of a giant TV screen instead of a gorilla. Waters himself comments, "I'm afraid that the way we're educating young people, we're encouraging our society to be more death-defying than ever before. What if we took the money we use to make guns and used it for education? What if we encouraged children not to prepare for a life as consumers and producers, but to become adults who think about things without prejudice and care about human rights? Can you imagine what our world would look like then? Amused To Death is an album that deserves a careful listen - for its sound and content. It's a look at a society obsessed with entertainment and touches on issues that have become even more complex and urgent in the last two decades. In 2015, television is just one option in an endless array of distractions that are always and everywhere at our fingertips. But with our eyes fixed on our screens, we can quickly lose sight of the crises and injustices of the real world.
