Most nu-disco does not have a named sub-style or clearly defining characteristics, except that it is rhythmically based on disco and does not fit into any other genre. Nu-Disco often uses a standard disco rhythm (a kick drum on every beat and a closed hi-hat on every eighth note), rather than the "high-energy" disco rhythm that is the basis for a lot of house music (the same kick, but an open hi-hat on the "off beat", i.e. every eighth note in between). It can also feature synths and 80s Italo Disco style drum machines.
