On this album - originally released in 2000 - Emmylou Harris weaves traditional country of its kind in a simply brilliant way into a dreamy, addictive, more experimental sonic tapestry that will enchant and take you to previously unreached dimensions. Last but not least, the recording technique plays a decisive role, departing from the usual procedures. The songs literally float, float, stun the senses. Traditional earth does not force itself to the forefront, yet it is there and is the basis of enchanting titles. What a long way from "Roses in the Snow" or "Elite Hotel" to "Red Dirt Girl"! But Emmylou Harris is one of those artists (Bob Dylan and Neil Young come to mind) who always make exactly the music they want to make, even if it varies greatly from album to album, but as artists they always stay true to themselves. And "Red Dirt Girl" is the work of a very mature artist. The title track refers to the reddish soil of Alabama, where she hails from, and "Bang The Drum Slowly" is dedicated to her dead father. The titles have elaborate lyrics, and the music is thoughtful to melancholy. Among them is a beautiful duet with Dave Matthews ("My Antonia"). One of the many highlights. Cancelled in Germany since 2003, this charming album is now recommended for rediscovery.
