Zinka Milanov

Celebrated Croatian Operatic Soprano

Zinka Milanov was a renowned Croatian-born operatic soprano, celebrated for her powerful and emotive voice. Born in Zagreb in 1906, she made her professional debut in Ljubljana in 1927. Milanov's career took a significant turn when she joined the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1937, where she became one of the leading sopranos and a favorite among audiences for nearly three decades. She was particularly admired for her interpretations of Verdi and Puccini heroines, with roles such as Tosca, Aida, and Leonora in "Il Trovatore" earning her critical acclaim. Milanov's extensive discography includes recordings of complete operas as well as recitals of arias, which have contributed to her lasting legacy as one of the great sopranos of the 20th century. She retired from the stage in 1966 but continued to influence the world of opera through teaching until her death in 1989.
